Today, HCE is a mixture of this ‘original’ Hawaiian pidgin and English. This hybrid was the result of two language dynamics occurring simultaneously: 1) the attempt suddenly of a public, heretofore accustomed to communicating in Hawaiian, to speak now in English, and 2) the Pidgin Hawaiian that was spoken by immigrants. The University of Hawaii at Hilo ‘Olelo Hawaii website explains īy the turn of the century, a Hawai‘i Creole language had begun to develop. The third definition is interesting as it points out the fact that the language the literature is written in is usually dominant. Several also point out these are regionally or socially distinct, and the second definition points out the fact that these English dialects are often seen as substandard. They all agree that a dialect is a sub-genre of a base language, in this case English. when considered as substandard.ģ.a special variety of a language: The literary dialect is usually taken as the standard language. a variety of a language that is distinguished from other varieties of the same language by features of phonology, grammar, and vocabulary, and by its use by a group of speakers who are set off from others geographically or socially.Ģ.a provincial, rural, or socially distinct variety of a language that differs from the standard language, esp. Now, it is important to know what a dialect is defined as. This was interesting because these two specific and general searches show that no one has really spent the time and effort to study HCE’s use in the classroom, and that Hawaiian pidgin is yet another in a long list of non-standard English dialects. I expanded my search to pidgin and creole in general, and found much relating to pidgin/creole in general, and general Hawaiian Pidgin English/Hawaiian Creole English(HCE) studies. What I did find was quite old, dating back to the 1970s. I started by doing a specific search for Hawaiian pidgin and came up with very little. Initially, I wanted to focus on teaching Hawaiian Creole English speakers effective methods, how much pidgin /what forms of pidgin should be allowed in the standard English classroom.
